Plath’s Work Is “Intense, Deeply Personal and Quiet Disturbing” free essay sample

Here the poet is looking for that spark of inspiration yet her surroundings are depressing and dreary, â€Å"this dull, ruinous landscape†. This bold statement is quite a negative and defeated line. Plath is in an intensely emotional state of exhaustion â€Å"Trekking through this season of fatigue†. The deeply personal nature of the poem is evident here. Plath is terrified of being on her own even though she cuts herself off from the world, â€Å"Although, I admit, I desire, Occasionally, some backtalk from the mute sky†. She has a deep desire for love and acceptance. Although she is finding it difficult to find that inspiration she is still hopeful, â€Å"I shall patch together a content†. This portrays the poets possessive determination to achieve inspiration. It is ironic that she writes such a creative poem about the failure to be inspired. This irony illustrates her intelligence and brilliance as a poet. In ‘Poppies in July’ Plath uses stark images of foreboding to portray her insecurity and tendency to self-harm. We will write a custom essay sample on Plath’s Work Is â€Å"Intense, Deeply Personal and Quiet Disturbing† or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This is a physic landscape which represents her troubled mental state. The poet is portraying self-destructive tendencies, â€Å"A mouth just bloodied†. In her extreme agitated state of mind she uses several violent and disturbing comparisons to describe poppies; For example instead of viewing flowers as beautiful she sees them as unattractive, dangerous and fascinating. She only sees two ways out of her depression: Firstly, to experience physical pain â€Å"If I could bleed† or secondly to slip into a drug-induced trance â€Å"nauseous capsules†. This poem is extremely intense. The poet compares the blazing red poppies to â€Å"little hell flames† before directly confronting them â€Å"Do you do no harm? † Personally I feel that these lines give a sense of urgency at the beginning of the poem. It is clear she is distressed which is very personal and disturbing. The poet develops more anguish in the third stanza, â€Å"I put my hand among the flames. Nothing burns† This exemplifies to the reader that the poet desires for self-destruction as she can no longer cope with the anxieties in her mind. Her personal torment is obvious in the line â€Å"It exhausts to me to watch you† – again we seen another example of her intense emotional exhaustion. (Plath is being very personal here and she is referring to herself). Ironically the more vivid the poppies are the more lethargic she feels. This contradiction is exceptionally disturbing as she can see no other way to numb the pain. The disturbed mood increases in the fourth stanza with two startling images both personifying the flowers. She compares the poppy to a â€Å"mouth just bloodied† this suggests recent violence and physical suffering. The reference to â€Å"bloody skirts† is equally harrowing in its connotations of miscarriage or maybe infidelity and it also draws attention to the fact that often women suffer most as a result of breakups so this is a deeply personal reflection on a very difficult time in her life. Morning Song’ is a deeply personal poem focusing on Plath’s mixed senses of apprehension and awe upon the birth of her first-born child. However both of these senses create conflicting feelings of separation and affection that test the strength of her maternal bond. While most new mothers pretended all was well, Sylvia published her feelings and I admire her bravery. Societ y in the 1960s held that all new mothers should be filled with immense joy after giving birth, but it does not mean that they actually were. The first line of the poem, â€Å"love set you going like a fat gold watch† depicts the intense and personal emotional forces conflicting within the poets mind. The word â€Å"fat† alludes to the clumsy or healthy nature of the baby; the word â€Å"gold† represents the child as precious and valued, and â€Å"watch† brings to mind the seemingly endless task of raising a child. In the second stanza Plath makes a point about her child merely being an object, â€Å"Our voices echo, magnifying your arrival. New statue. In a drafty museum your nakedness shadows are safety†. I found this comparison quiet disturbing but also very personal and realistic. Here the baby is called a â€Å"statue†, it is new, it is exciting, but it is implied that the baby is just something to look at, this is very personal as it reflects the real confused and conflicted emotions of a new mom or one experiencing post natal depression. This stanza shows the infant as the new attraction in a â€Å"drafty museum†. In my opinion this illustrates that the baby is simply new addition to an old collection. This is disturbing as you wouldn’t expect this from a new mother. As the poem evolves we see the poet becoming more involved in the mothering role with a quote that illustrates she can laugh at herself, â€Å"One cry and I stumble from bed cow heavy†. Plath is not merely invoking the imagery of motherhood, but speaks of it in its plainest sense. She appreciates that motherhood will be immensely laborious to raise a child, â€Å"A far sea moves in my ear† however nothing will over shadow the unconditional love she has for her child. Plath’s deeply personal writing re-occurs in her poem ‘Child’ which was written shortly after her sons first birthday. It is a beautifully composed poem in which a mother expresses her frustrated wishes for her child, nevertheless I found is very disturbing. She writes about the love she has for her child while also revealing her inner torment. The first line shows the poets appreciation of childhood innocence, â€Å"Your clear eye is the one absolutely beautiful thing†. The tone at first is hopeful. Her love for her child is generous and unconditional. â€Å"I want to fill it with colour†. The childhood language is lively and playful. Plath plans to give her child the happiest of time filled with, â€Å"colour and ducks†. The vigorous rhythm and animated internal rhyme in the phrase â€Å"the zoo of the new† capture the sense of youthful wonder. However, Plath’s disillusionment with the world is also implied and she seems concerned that she cannot protect her child from the tainted world. The final images are stark and powerful- the pathetic â€Å"wringing of hands† gives emphasis to her helplessness, I found this quiet disturbing. The last line poignantly portrays the paradox of the tension between Plath’s dreams for her child in the face of the despair she feels about the oppressive world; this â€Å"ceiling without a star†. I found that this dark mood is in sharp contrast with the rest of the poem. The early celebration has been replaced by a disturbing anguish and an overwhelming sense of failure. Plath’s suicide two weeks after writing this poem adds to its poignancy. Sadly we realiseonly too late the disturbing demons in her mind. For me, Plath’s poetry stands apart because of its sheer intense emotional power. In poems like those discussed above, there is a deeply personal emotional intensity absent from any other poetry I have studied. Reading Plath’s poetry the personal nature of it was palpable. It made it seem to me like she was talking to me. The powerful imagery, like that of â€Å"Morning Song† and the disturbing field of poppies, will remain with me for the rest of my life. Ironically she used her suffering to create beauty. She could recognise the beauty of her poems but she could not see the beauty of her own life. She described life as being magically run by two electric currents and these she names joyous positive and despairing negative†. There is little doubt that Plath’s poetry is intense deeply personal and disturbing. By Erin O’ Driscoll.

History of Super Bowl Weather Delays and Cancellations

History of Super Bowl Weather Delays and Cancellations Could 2018s Super Bowl LI be delayed or postponed due to inclement weather? Given that the 52nd  Super Bowl game will be held at the  U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, theres a chance there could be snow in the forecast. Still, in NFL Super Bowl history, no game has ever been delayed due to weather. (Super Bowl XLVII in 2014 was the first, and so far, the only game to be delayed. The Ravens-49ers game was delayed for 34 minutes in the third quarter, thanks  to an electrical mishap.) But that doesnt mean weather hasnt tried to.   Super Bowls Turned Snow Bowls Although a weather contingency plan has never had to be implemented in Super Bowl history, there have been a handful of close calls when the Super Bowl was at risk of being delayed.   Super Bowl XLI. February is normally Floridas dry season, but in 2007, an active jet stream and a nearby stationary front converged, leading to monsoon rains in Miami. The game still went on, but not even ponchos were enough to keep fans in the stadium dry. Many left their seats and took shelter in the stadium concourse, or simply left the game early.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Super Bowl XLV.  At the start of Super Bowl week 2011, all eyes were drawn to Arlington, Texas, when the host city was hit by an ice storm. Later in the week, an additional 4 inches of snow fell. An arctic front helped the snow and ice linger all week long, and kept temperatures in the 20s and 30s. But by the weekend, the wintry weather had thawed.     Super Bowl XLVIII. Weather contingency plans were on hand for 2014s Super Bowl the first to be played in an outdoor venue at a cold-weather city (East Rutherford, New Jersey). Not only did a winter storm drop a mountain of snow on the MetLife Stadium just before Superbow l week, but the  Farmers Almanac predicted another round of heavy snow was on tap for Super Bowl weekend. Luckily, when it came down to game time, the weather cooperated with cloudy skies and an air temperature of 49 °F at kickoff nearly 10-15 degrees above normal for the city. (Oddly enough, a winter storm hit the next day, blanketing the city in 8 inches of snow and stranding many Super Bowl travelers.) The Warm-Climate Rule Surprised at the lack of weather delays despite the Super Bowl being played mid-winter? One reason for this is because football, like our US postal service, has a neither snow, nor rain, nor heat... culture. But, a second, lesser-known reason  is the leagues warm-climate rule a sort of built-in weather contingency plan that must be met when choosing the Super Bowls host city.   The NFLs warm-climate requirement mandates  the host stadium location have an average temperature of 50 °F (10 °C) or above for that years scheduled Super Bowl date. At least, thats the way the NFL and Host Committee used to pick potential Super Bowl cities. In 2010, this warm-climate requirement was waived, giving cold-weather cities with open-air stadiums a fair chance at also hosting a Super Bowl. What was the reason for the  change? The chance to offer a new experience for football fans attending in-person and watching at home. In the sentiments of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodall, ...The game of football is made to be played in the elements.  Ã‚   Football in the Bleak Mid-Winter Why is the Super Bowl held in  winter, anyway? Its certainly NOT a matter of preference. Its simply the timing of the NFL schedule. Opening season is always the weekend after Labor Day (the first Monday in September) in early fall; add in the 17-week regular season, three rounds of playoffs, and you land exactly five months later into late winter. Additional playoffs have pushed the Super Bowl date out from early to mid-January to February, but still winter nonetheless.          Winter weather can wreak havoc on football  in a number of ways: Snow.  Snow makes for a slippery football field, but its primary threat is its color.   covering white goal lines, end lines, hash marks. If snowfall is particularly heavy, or if winds are driving winds, it can also mean reduced or no visibility for players on the field.Sleet, freezing rain.  Ice on the field poses a similar threat to players as it does to pedestrians and drivers on roadways and sidewalks: a total loss of traction.Frost.  If temperatures are cold enough, you dont even need snow or ice to freeze the grass (or turf) underfoot frost is enough to do the job. To combat this, many cold-climate stadiums are outfitted with a system of underground electric coils or underground pipes filled with antifreeze (yes, the same stuff thats in your car) to keep the field soft.Cold Air.  Even if you dont have to worry about a frozen field, cold weather still poses another threat to the game: under-inflated footballs. A football (which is customarily inflated indoors) can def late by roughly 0.2 PSI for every 10-degree drop in temperature it experiences after being transferred outdoors.  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹ Super Bowl Saturday? So, what would happen, if a major weather event DID threaten the safety of spectators on Super Bowl Sunday? A weather contingency plan would be enacted. Contingency plans more or less move the game from its traditional Sunday spot to the Friday or  Saturday of Super Bowl week, or the following Monday or Tuesday. Which day the game is postponed to is a decision thats made closely with meteorologists. For example, if a snowstorm was forecast for Super Bowl night, playing Saturday might be an option. Whereas, if a blizzard hit on a Friday (two days before the scheduled game) it could be the following Tuesday before the city had time to dig out roads and parking lots.   To date, the Super Bowl has never been changed from its originally scheduled date.   If ever  ill weather were to impact the Super Bowl for up to a week, a contingency plan may call for the game to be relocated to another city  altogether.    Super Bowls with the Worst Weather Just because the Super Bowl has eluded all weather-related delays, doesnt mean its game day weather has always been sunny and 60 degrees. Heres a look at some of the weathers most unsettled game days in Super Bowl history.   Super Bowl No. Date Host City Weather Record VI Jan 16, 1972 New Orleans, LA Coldest Super Bowl played at an outdoor venue (39 F). XVI Jan 24, 1982 Pontiac, MI First time Super Bowl was held in a cold-weather city. First Super Bowl played in the snow. XVIII Jan 22, 1984 Tampa, FL Windiest Super Bowl (25 mph wind gusts). XXXIV Jan 30, 2000 Atlanta, GA A rare ice storm hit during Super Bowl week. Atlantas indoor stadium saved it from possible delays. XLI Feb 4, 2007 Miami, FL The first and wettest Super Bowl to be played in the rain. Is There a Gay Gene Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Is There a Gay Gene - Essay Example J. Kallman's and W. W. Schlegel's findings in the 1940s showed that twins had a 100 percent concordance rate for homosexual orientation, where concordance is defined as the level of similarity existing for different characteristics. Although the results seemed overwhelmingly high, they laid the base for further studies. In 1991, J. Michael Bailey and Richard C. Pillard conducted a similar experiment comparing identical twins, fraternal twins, and nongenetically related adopted brothers. The genetics of sexual orientation are not quite so straightforward, but there is no doubt that becoming gay is influenced by a genetic predisposition. In one study, it was reported that 52% of monozygotic twins of gay men were also gay, but this figure dropped to 22% for dizygotic twins. (1) Dr. Hamer in 1991 from the Department of Biochemistry at the national Institute of Health began a study - possible genetic natire of homosexuality. He chose to study markers on the X chromosome because there was already evidence for a preponderance of gay men on the maternal side of families. Hamer hypothesized the different ways that a genetic disorder could be expressed in a person. He began theorizing around both autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritances, but realized neither could work. For the gay gene to be autosomal dominant, 50% of the children of a family would be homosexual, and while this fact was true with some of his volunteers, there were not sufficient amounts of data to validate the hypothesis. An autosomal recessive inheritance would result in 25% of the children to be homosexual, another fact that was not easily supported. Hamer's breakthrough came during the interview of one of his volunteers; the volunteer suggested that the gene could be hidden on one of the sex chromosomes. Hamer continued his probing and research. After mapping out family trees, he collected DNA samples from his volunteers and their mothers, making extra samples and storing them for later analysis. (2)As a trial run, he began to test markers on the X chromosomes of the samples of blood from the gay volunteers. Using sib-pairs, a way of telling if brothers are concordant (sharing the same X chromosome from their mother) or discordant (one child inheriting one X chromosome from their mother, and the other child inheriting the second X chromosome), Hamer quickly learned that most of the gay brothers were concordant, therefore making it highly possible that a genetic link could be found. He began testing in random clusters, focusing around the region Xq28 (X for the chromosome, q for the arm, and 28 for the position on the arm). Researchers say it's the first time the entire human genetic makeup has been scanned in search of possible genetic determinants of male sexual orientation. The results suggest that several genetic regions may influence homosexuality. Identical twins, for instance, share the same set of chromosomal patterns. Therefore, if one twin's DNA has a homosexual genetic trait, then it is inevitable that both twins will be homosexuals. However, that is not the case with all twins. When one twin is homosexual, the probability of the other identical twin being homosexual is 50 percent. Thus, the "gay"-gene theory

Culture unit 9 Human resources Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Culture unit 9 Human resources - Research Paper Example A health care organization must stay on top of the latest technological advances in the medical industry. New technologies can provide more income opportunities, greater productivity, and better efficiency. Quality and patient safety are two principles that must be followed by all health care organizations. Organizations in this industry that do not emphasize creating a corporate culture in which safety is top priority may face unwanted business risks such as the potential of a lawsuit for medical malpractice. Maintaining high quality standards is important towards the success of any organization. A corporate culture can help managers create a platform in which the quality versus cost debate is considered in the decision making process of the executives of the organization. Choosing quality over cost is a better long term strategy because it can increase the customer retention rate of the company. Hospitals have to make changes to their operations to adapt to the changing health care environment of the 21st century. A way to determine the needs of hospitals is by hiring a consultant to assess the business operations of a hospital. Changes in the coverage of medical plans must be closely monitored by hospitals each month. This can prevent a hospital from admitting a patient under the erroneous assumption that the medical plan will pay for the medical procedure. Another change that hospitals must pay attention too is changes in the compensation for medical professionals. Higher labor costs are forcing hospitals to adjust the fees they charge to its customers. A dysfunctional culture often occurs due to the presence of miscommunication and bad relationships among the employees of a firm (Calvert, 2009). There are different steps that companies can take to change dysfunctional cultures. The first step is to emphasize the importance of communication in the workplace. A firm suffering from a dysfunctional culture can implement a feedback system to gain insight

Preserving Water is Preserving Life Essay

There are various resources that the Earth provides its inhabitants, but the most important natural resource is water. However, despite the fact that water is an irreplaceable natural resource, humans tend to abuse without knowing the implications. It is necessary to save water not only because it is a very manageable resource (Padmavathy & Malarvizhi, 2006), but also because of the fact that water provides life to every living thing on Earth. Without it, life cannot be sustained: humans can survive weeks without food, but without water, they will only be able to survive for a few days. Apart from this, water also sustains the growth of life in forests, jungles which are the habitats of other species. Unfortunately, as much as the world would like to believe that nature’s resources would last forever, such is not possible. Water is a finite source, and only about 0. 024% of all the water resources in the world is accessible, while the rest of the world’s water supply consists of oceans and inaccessible freshwater in the deep earth (Dauvergne, 2005). Humans, animals, and plant life will not be able to subsist without water; plant life would not be able to grow, and animals which eat plants will not have any food supply. These animals will deplete in numbers, they will devastate the food chain and bigger animals which eat these animals will also lose their food supply. If animals continue to thin in numbers, they would eventually become endangered, and unfortunately, it is possible that they may become instinct. In order to preserve life on Earth, every individual should have the initiative to save water. There is a need to educate people of the implications of losing freshwater on Earth, for the first step to understanding would be education. If people pitch in and do their part for the preservation of water, life on Earth may have a chance in subsisting for generations. References Dauvergne, P. (2005).
